In the past I assumed that everyone has a way of writing PostScript files
directly to a printer. Silly me. I guess I've lived a sheltered life.
Anyway, I now provide several file download options and instructions for
their use! What a concept.
Option #1:
- Downloading and using the PostScript file.
- This is the origional file, implimenting the origional idea.
The advantages of this are:
- You can change the size of the ruler and target to suit
yourself. This can be done with a simple text editor.
- This is the smallest file to download at only 33k.
- This file will output at the maximum resolution of your output
device.
- You can examine the commented PostScriprt code and learn
something about postscript. ;-)
The dis-advantages of this are:
- You need a PostScript output device or Illustrator 6.0 or above.
- You need to know how to output PostScript files directly to
your printer. (I may be able to help there.)
Download the 33k PostScript file
bellows.ps here.

Thanks Christophe!
Here's the PostScript printing instructions for The Macintosh:
- Install LaserWriterUtility:
- This utility has been included with the system software
"forever" but is not installed by default. Find your origional
MacOS system install diskettes or CD-ROM and do a custom install
of just this utility.
- Copy the PostScript file bellows.ps file to the printer
- Launch LaserWriterUtility
- Select Menu / Utilities / Download PostScript file...
- Locate (and "open" bellows.ps)
- For "Save PostScript output" you can just take the default.
The postscript code gets sent straight to the printer.
Here's the PostScript printing instructions for Windows 95:
- Determine the printer name:
- Start / Settings / Printers
- Select the PostScript printer you want to print to.
- Click with right mouse button, select "Properties"
- Select the "details" tab.
- Note the "port name" in the top pop-up. Mine reads: C:\lwn.prn (unknown local printer)
- Close or cancel
- Copy the PostScript file bellows.ps file to the printer
- Choose Start / Programs / MS-DOS prompt
- Do the copy, in my case it looks like this:
- copy c:\bellows.ps C:\lwn.prn
The postscript code gets sent straight to the printer
without being interpreted and converted to PostScript.
On the Mac there is a little utility that outputs
postscript code to a printer and reports back with any
PS errors. Maybe(?) there's a utility like that
somewhere for the PC too? If you know about one please
let me know.
And lastly...:
If you have Adobe Illustrator you can just download the file:
bellows.ps
read it into Illustrator and print it.
Option #2:
- Downloading and using JPEG file.
- This is a simplified method that should work for any web-savvy system.
The advantages of this are:
The dis-advantages of this are:
- The JPEG file was saved at a resolution of 150 DPI so it may
be a bit more "jaggy".
- Due to the JPEG compression there is a little less sharpness.
- The file size is larger at 182k.
Download the 182k JPEG file
bellows.jpg here.
Or simply view it and print it from your browser. You'll probably have to
set your printer to print at 50%.
Option #3:
- Downloading and using GIF file.
- If all that failed, try this...
Download and print the 380k GIF file
bellows.gif here.
Or simply view it and print it from your browser. You'll probably have to
set your printer to print at 50%.
